The Department of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University equips students with diverse sources and methodologies to critically examine and value core elements of religious experience and thought. Approaching this exploration academically, the department assists students in refining their personal perspectives.
While rooted in Catholic tradition, the department examines Catholicism alongside broader Christian heritage and in dialogue with global religious traditions. The foundational course, Theological Foundations, presents the concept of divine revelation within Judeo-Christian frameworks and explores its impact on human existence, environmental stewardship, and the pursuit of truth and beauty. This exploration occurs within an interfaith and worldwide perspective, incorporating studies of various religions and societal contexts. Advanced courses delve into specific dimensions of Christian or other religious traditions while tackling contemporary ethical and social concerns.
After completing Theological Foundations, students can pursue upper-level undergraduate courses (2000-4000 level) covering: Biblical studies of both Hebrew and Christian scriptures; Christian history from its beginnings to modernity; systematic theology addressing key Christian themes and current challenges; theological ethics analyzing Christian practices; comparative religion studies that juxtapose Christianity with other faiths (like Islam) or investigate individual world religions; and spirituality courses exploring manifestations of Christian devotion, including Ignatian spiritual practices.
