The field of Ancient Near Eastern Studies explores the history, literature, religions, and cultures of the Near East from 3000 BCE to 640 CE. This interdisciplinary program combines humanities, social sciences, and sacred texts. The region studied corresponds to what we now call the Middle East. The major is designed to give students comprehensive knowledge of ancient Near Eastern civilizations, with special focus on either the Hebrew Bible and related texts or the Greek New Testament and associated literature within their historical context. Career Paths - Graduates in Ancient Near Eastern Studies are well-prepared for advanced academic work in biblical and ancient Near Eastern scholarship. The program's focus on analytical reading, critical thinking, and writing also offers excellent preparation for careers in professional fields or library science.
Students will develop the ability to analyze key historical events and cultural developments in the ancient Near East, including those of ancient Israel and neighboring societies such as Egypt, Greater Syria, and Mesopotamia.
