Since its founding in 1968, the Department of Religion has served as a cornerstone of Rice University's academic community, maintaining this distinguished legacy today.
Our program focuses on diverse historical religious traditions including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, African American Religions, and African Religions, while fostering rigorous scholarship among emerging religion scholars at all academic levels. Students who join us will tackle contemporary inquiries about human existence, examining influential texts and traditions that mold our shared future. Our research bridges scientific and artistic disciplines, primarily focusing on how meaning is constructed through interpersonal connections. Faculty members frequently explore these themes through lenses such as gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, political systems, and popular culture.
