The Photography BFA program encourages you to investigate social, cultural, and historical contexts to deepen your understanding of the medium. Through careful analysis and structured discussions, you'll enhance your ability to interpret images and cultivate visual literacy, empowering you to express ideas and create impactful work. After completing the first-year Experimental and Foundation Studies, sophomore year introduces you to analog and digital techniques using diverse camera formats, traditional darkroom printing, and digital processes. By critically analyzing photographs, you'll sharpen your thinking skills while building visual literacy grounded in photographic history, alongside seminars examining photography's role in portraying differences in class, race, gender, and identity.

Junior year builds on this foundation, emphasizing creative experimentation with photographic techniques and other mediums, as well as exploring materials, subjects, and artistic approaches. You'll initiate independent projects, develop research methods, and refine conceptual ideas through group critiques, written assignments, and public presentations.

Senior year centers on creating work that establishes a sustainable artistic practice extending beyond the BFA into professional endeavors. The culminating degree project includes a written thesis featuring critical self-reflection, influences, and an assessment of your artistic growth, accompanied by curated solo and two-person exhibitions in the department's Red Eye Gallery.
