The ISE doctoral program equips students to develop and implement innovative mathematical, computational, and statistical methods for groundbreaking ISE applications. This foundation enables our Ph.D. graduates to thrive in academic, corporate, and public sector careers. Those completing the ISE doctoral program earn a Ph.D. in Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems (DSES) - a title reflecting the department's longstanding tradition of interdisciplinary problem-solving for real-world challenges. Notably, the department originated in 1987 as DSES, uniting experts from mathematics, engineering, and management fields. Interdisciplinary research remains central to ISE's identity, with faculty investigating diverse domains such as emergency management, resilient supply networks, national security, and collaborative decision processes.
Our Ph.D. program provides distinctive research and learning opportunities. Student research aligns with RPI's visionary motto: "Why not change the world?" Doctoral candidates apply ISE's analytical capabilities to pressing global issues, particularly in crisis management and flexible supply systems. Discover more about our research initiatives here. For aspiring academics, our program offers specialized training to teach future generations, including innovative approaches like virtual office hours that complement conventional undergraduate instruction.
