The PhD program in exploration systems design takes a sophisticated systems-based approach to creating scientific exploration technologies for challenging environments both on Earth and in space.
This interdisciplinary degree serves as a distinctive training ground for systems engineers focused on advancing exploration science technologies. A partnership between the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering enables students to concentrate on areas like planetary exploration, astronomical instruments, robotics, and sensor network development.
The program combines core science, instrumentation, and systems engineering courses from the School of Earth and Space Exploration with complementary engineering coursework. The systems engineering specialization equips students to design, plan, build, and manage complex exploration systems, including space missions and large-scale multidisciplinary experiments.
