The Department of East Asian Studies (EAS) provides diverse undergraduate courses meeting rigorous academic standards in language proficiency and cultural understanding, concentrating on China, Korea, and Japan. Students majoring in EAS undertake studies in literature, history, anthropology, media, and cultural studies across these East Asian regions. Their curriculum incorporates both cross-regional and localized viewpoints, covering historical periods from ancient times to the present. While the EAS major facilitates specialized exploration and direct engagement with East Asia, the minor programs in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language enable students to integrate their East Asian language and cultural interests with other Princeton majors. Serving as a central hub, the East Asian Studies Program coordinates East Asian studies initiatives across Princeton University, with faculty participation from multiple departments including Anthropology, Art and Archaeology, Comparative Literature, and others. This program also sponsors East Asia-focused academic events and offers financial assistance for language study and research. Undergraduates from any discipline can obtain an East Asian Studies certificate (equivalent to a minor), which cultivates regional expertise while offering comparative insights into Western civilization. Additionally, the program funds language study abroad for undergraduates and supports graduate students' linguistic training and dissertation work, while also facilitating visiting scholar appointments.

Qualification Requirements

Academic record is evaluated within the context of your educational system and school curriculum. Your academic record should include any available internal grades from classes, achieved marks from external exams (for example: (I)GCSE, British A-Level, International Baccalaureate, national leaving exams such as Std X/Std XII in India), or a combination of both.

If English is not your native language and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic) or the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). You are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic if English is your native language or if you have spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction.
