The Department of Art and Archaeology focuses on examining visual arts and material artifacts across diverse cultures and historical eras. Students can specialize in either Art History or Studio Art, with additional details available about the Archaeology Certificate. The Visual Arts Program faculty lead studio courses, while Art History classes often incorporate hands-on elements. Through intimate class settings and direct engagement with original artifacts and primary materials, students investigate topics ranging from urban design in ancient Rome to modern cities, printmaking traditions in East Asia and Europe, archaeological studies of ancient and medieval periods, architectural history from Early Modern to Islamic styles, photographic arts from the 19th to 21st centuries, and contemporary artistic expressions from Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. The Art History concentration requires comprehensive study of visual arts across various periods and cultures, with prerequisites including two department courses. The combined Art History and Studio Art track leads to a senior thesis exhibition, requiring prospective majors to complete one department course and two Visual Arts studio classes by sophomore year's end. Applications with creative portfolios are due to the Lewis Center for the Arts office on the first Wednesday after spring break, with admission decisions communicated by early April.
