The undergraduate program in Archaeology and the Ancient World offers students a chance to delve into the diverse field of archaeology while promoting interdisciplinary exploration of antiquity. While centered on the archaeology and art of the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and Near East at Brown University, this concentration motivates students to expand beyond these regions, connecting with the university's strengths in history, epigraphy, art, ethics, engineering, religious studies, and sciences. Featuring three interconnected tracks, the program provides flexibility for students to craft their own academic journey within this broad discipline. All tracks share a common foundation before allowing students to specialize in areas like cultural heritage, archaeological theory, materials analysis, or specific historical periods. The curriculum is structured to facilitate progressive learning, from introductory classes to advanced seminars. Students are encouraged to include courses that examine social inequality, exclusion, and diversity, both through Diverse Perspectives in Liberal Learning (DPLL) courses and other classes addressing similar themes. The program actively promotes research opportunities through fieldwork, internships, museum work, or independent studies.
