Cultivate a strong sense of purpose while mastering the art of visual communication through dedicated studio practice. Our curriculum actively encourages diverse artistic approaches, ranging from life observation and photographic references to purely abstract conceptual work. First-year students complete the Foundation program's core requirements alongside essential art history and liberal arts classes, transitioning into the fine arts major by sophomore fall. As they progress through mandatory art history and general education courses, second-year students delve deeper into their specialization—be it painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and integrated practices, or jewelry design. Alongside studio work, all fine arts majors participate in departmental seminars exploring contemporary art's social, historical, and critical dimensions. Elective credits allow students to explore secondary interests, pursue minors, or gain professional internship experience. The final year centers on creating a cohesive body of work for the senior thesis exhibition, complemented by professional practice courses that prepare graduates for career success through portfolio development and strategic planning for funding, gallery representation, residencies, and employment opportunities.
Students will: Master fundamental design principles and apply them to achieve specific artistic goals, Gain working knowledge of painting's historical traditions and evolving approaches to representation and meaning, Acquire technical proficiency with tools and processes to transform concepts into finished works, Develop awareness of historical and contemporary painting movements, Explore varied media's expressive potential and conceptual frameworks in painting, Demonstrate independent working ability culminating in exhibition-ready original artwork.
