The Studio Art program provides an immersive educational experience within a supportive community, ideal for those aiming for graduate studies or professional careers in visual arts. Instead of specializing in one medium (like Painting or Photography), the undergraduate curriculum offers two Studio Art degrees, both enabling students to explore coursework across five distinct disciplines.
In their initial year, Studio Art students engage with the First-Year Core Program—a foundational series of courses for all department newcomers. These classes develop essential technical and conceptual skills while preparing students for advanced degree work. As they progress, participants can experiment with various media across the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to higher-level courses.
Complementing studio work, students are urged to attend lectures and seminars featuring visiting artists and critics. Seniors gain hands-on experience by helping curate and present work in an annual public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the tools to establish an independent artistic practice and pursue professional opportunities like gallery representation, residencies, and grants. The Painting & Drawing discipline fosters technical skill development and experimental approaches. By working with innovative materials and embracing interdisciplinary methods, students refine their craft to produce contemporary art. A diverse faculty brings expertise in creative practice, professional insight, and cultural exploration to the program.
