Obtaining a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from Penn State positions you as a pioneering expert in nutrition. The program emphasizes leadership development, cutting-edge nutrition research, and cross-disciplinary education, combining resources and knowledge from multiple departments to tackle significant challenges such as: advancing understanding of nutrient requirements for optimal health, including how nutrients interact with environmental factors and disease; enhancing techniques for evaluating dietary intake and nutritional health; examining how foods, plant compounds, and dietary habits influence wellness and disease prevention; investigating determinants of food choices and eating behaviors while designing and assessing nutritional interventions for individuals and communities; refining approaches to help people make healthier food choices; and deepening insights into metabolic processes at cellular, molecular, and physiological levels in humans and animals.
College graduates with an undergraduate degree in nutrition, animal sciences, food science, dietetics, or a related biological or social science will be considered for admission.
The basic expectations for admission from undergraduate studies include: 6 credits in chemistry (organic and inorganic); 3 credits each in physiology, biochemistry, and nutrition; and physics, calculus, and analytical chemistry for some research areas in nutrition science, and social science for public health and community nutrition.
English Proficiency: TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT); TOEFL Paper-based test - the minimum acceptable score is 550; IELTS - The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5.
