The PhD program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies equips students for high-level professional roles in academia as well as careers in non-profit organizations, government agencies, or private sectors like law and public policy. The graduate curriculum develops students' analytical abilities to prepare for customized qualifying examinations and to undertake dissertation research. The program offers two pathways: the standard PhD route for those with existing Master's degrees (typically completed in five years) and the accelerated direct-to-PhD option for students without prior graduate degrees (normally finished in six years). Participants in either track who lack a WGSS Master's can earn one by completing 30 credits and passing the MA examination, or by successfully defending their PhD qualifying exams. Earning the MA degree does not delay PhD program progression.
A baccalaureate or professional degree (or equivalent foreign credential) from an accredited college or university, earned by the expected date of entry into your graduate program. A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in all prior undergraduate and graduate work.
