The Department of Sociology provides four distinct academic pathways: a combined Bachelor's/Master's program for GSU undergraduates, a standalone MA professional program, a PhD track for students holding an MA, and a joint MA/PhD option for those entering with a BA. These offerings give students comprehensive grounding in sociological principles while allowing specialization in particular fields. Admission to the Joint MA/PhD Program requires a bachelor's degree, while the PhD-only option necessitates a master's in sociology or related discipline. Students gain foundational knowledge through diverse coursework covering research methods, statistical analysis, and theoretical frameworks, complemented by faculty expertise in six key concentrations: (1) Gender Studies, (2) Health Sociology, (3) Life Course Development, (4) Race and Ethnic Dynamics, (5) Sexuality Studies, and (6) Urban Sociology. The department emphasizes practical application of sociological concepts and cultivates strong mentorship between professors and graduate students.
