The Urban Studies PhD program stands out as an interdisciplinary doctoral initiative aimed at equipping students for advanced urban society research. This program operates on the principle that understanding metropolitan challenges requires proficiency in diverse research approaches, familiarity with urban growth theories, and awareness of cities' historical and social underpinnings. Drawing expertise from multiple urban-focused fields, the program delivers unparalleled urban research training unavailable in conventional doctoral tracks. To date, it has produced more than 100 PhD graduates. The curriculum's foundation covers urban social systems, urban research methodologies, and urban development theories, with students allocating three courses to one of over ten available specialization tracks.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant must meet Graduate School requirements, hold a master's degree or the equivalent in a social science or a related field, and meet the criteria established by the Urban Studies Programs Faculty to be considered for admission: Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's academic work. Recommendation forms may be obtained online from the link above. A sample of the applicant's written work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to conduct independent social science research and/or the ability to critically analyze the work of others. A letter of intent outlining the applicant's reasons for graduate study. GRE scores. A response to a question that elucidates the applicant's reasons for taking up the academic study of urban affairs and describes her/his intellectual ambitions in the field. You must have attended this institution for at least one year and the degree was earned at an institution in the United States, and you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S since earning the degree. Cambridge English: Advanced / Cambridge English Proficiency C1 level or higher. TOEFL IBT (not Home Edition) - 79 120, IELTS - 6.5 9.0.
