The doctoral program focuses on research and mainly trains sociologists for academic roles at universities or research positions across academic, private, and government sectors. To see where our recent graduates have secured jobs, check the Recent Student Placement section on the Department of Sociology and Criminology website.
Graduate students collaborate closely with faculty on joint research projects while also building their own independent research initiatives. Beyond research opportunities, students gain extensive training and hands-on experience in undergraduate teaching, including online instruction. Our department's training program features an orientation workshop for new teaching assistants, an advanced graduate seminar (SOC:7010 Teaching Sociology), instructional courses, and the chance for graduate students to create and teach their own courses with faculty guidance.
