The Latina and Latino Studies Program (LLSP) at Northwestern University offers diverse courses exploring the histories, political experiences, cultural expressions, artistic works, material culture, and intellectual heritage of U.S. Latinas and Latinos.
For more than a decade, Northwestern students have consistently advocated for establishing both major and minor degrees in Latina and Latino Studies. Student activists mobilized to push for either a full department or at minimum an academic program. Simultaneously, faculty and graduate students passionate about Latina and Latino studies formed scholarly networks, including reading circles and specialized forums such as the Northwestern Latina/o Research Initiative. After years of collaborative effort, the Latina and Latino Studies Program officially launched in fall 2008. The program has since expanded its enrollment of majors and minors, thriving through the ongoing contributions of an engaged community comprising dedicated students, staff, and faculty.
