Yet divisions rooted in ethnicity, religion, and economics persist, sparking conflicts both within and between communities. This growing interconnectedness coupled with enduring divides necessitates deeper insight into diverse cultures and social structures. Societies cannot be analyzed in isolation or as static entities—they evolve through global and regional influences, including political, military, economic, and cultural factors, as well as their historical trajectories. In turn, individuals and communities actively reshape these environments by redefining their historical narratives. The International Studies Program takes an interdisciplinary approach, leveraging UC San Diego's existing expertise in global specializations. Political science contributes well-established frameworks in international relations and comparative politics. Economics provides essential theories and analytical tools for comprehending our interconnected world. Sociology, business, and anthropology focus on comparative analyses of social structures, markets, and cultural practices. Literature and linguistics offer extensive coursework exploring non-English languages and traditions. Additionally, area studies deliver in-depth knowledge about specific nations and geographical regions.
