The graduate certificate in postsecondary developmental literacy and language education is a cross-disciplinary program overseen by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education. Open to all Northern Illinois University graduate students maintaining satisfactory academic progress, this program aims to train educators for diverse postsecondary literacy environments such as learning support services and developmental education programs across community colleges and universities. Upon completion, graduates will gain the ability to: examine the historical foundations of developmental literacy education, appreciate student diversity in social, cultural, linguistic, and academic backgrounds, create and deliver research-backed instructional strategies, and engage professionally in the postsecondary literacy education field.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOEFL ibt. Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum 2.75 overall GPA on a 4.00 system or a 3.20 GPA with 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution.
