As one of five programs in the OSU English Department, Screen Studies combines film, television, and new media studies. What sets this program apart is its strong focus on theoretical inquiries about moving images—questions that maintain historical awareness while recognizing the essential connection between history and theory. This interdisciplinary program promotes academic work across various fields and supports multiple research methods for studying film and media, spanning avant-garde to mainstream genres, from American to global perspectives, and covering both classic and modern works.

Located in the historic Morrill Hall, Screen Studies provides courses for both graduate and undergraduate students. Undergraduates can choose the
Screen Option
as part of their English Bachelor's degree, while graduate students can specialize in Screen Studies for either their Master's or Ph.D. in English. The curriculum explores diverse moving image forms—American and international, fiction and documentary, narrative and experimental—while examining their historical development, artistic qualities, and cultural-political significance.
