The Environmental Studies Bachelor of Arts program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of environmental systems through scientific and humanistic perspectives. This degree emphasizes developing practical skills to prepare graduates for professional environmental careers. During their initial two years, students take foundational courses covering key scientific topics like food systems, water resources, and climate studies, alongside human-focused subjects such as sustainable development, environmental health, and justice principles. Additionally, all students complete skill-based coursework tailored to enhance their co-op and career prospects. The program offers five specialized concentrations, each drawing from interdisciplinary courses across the university. These focus areas explore critical intersections between society and the environment, leveraging Northeastern's strengths in public health, environmental law, data visualization, storytelling, and sustainable economics. Through the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences, students gain a holistic perspective on Earth's ecosystems, studying chemical, physical, geological, socio-ecological, and biological processes. This knowledge base, combined with focus on contemporary environmental crises, empowers graduates to develop sustainable solutions. Alumni emerge ready to tackle pressing challenges like declining marine populations, climate change effects (including rising sea levels), coastal degradation, and contamination. The program emphasizes collaborative problem-solving, training students to work alongside scientists, engineers, policymakers, and social scientists in multidisciplinary teams.
