The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides both Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees in Anthropology. This program focuses on humanity's cultural and material legacy across time - past, present, and future - while emphasizing that advanced anthropological education prepares students for diverse career paths. Each student develops a customized study plan with guidance from their academic advisor. Beyond coursework, graduate students are encouraged to participate in professional growth opportunities like presenting research at conferences, campus/community involvement, and teaching/research assistantships. Our alumni have pursued careers in various fields including higher education, archaeological contracting, folklore program direction, international studies administration, National Park Service archaeology, nonprofit event coordination, overseas English instruction, and cultural research analysis.
To earn either the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Anthropology, students must complete at least 30 credits, with 16 didactic credits required for the thesis track or 21 didactic credits for the paper/exam alternatives.
