The Anthropology Department provides graduate studies in applied anthropology, culminating in a Master of Arts degree with an Applied Anthropology specialization. This program trains professionals to employ anthropological theories and methodologies in designing, implementing, and assessing research initiatives and practical interventions. Applicants with either a Bachelor's in Anthropology or relevant experience applying anthropological principles are encouraged to apply. Responding to increasing needs in California and beyond for experts who can navigate complex multicultural urban and regional challenges, the curriculum focuses on anthropological theory and its practical implementation in diverse global settings. Graduate students engage in hands-on research and fieldwork placements. The program features three specialization tracks within the framework of urban and regional cultural transformation: educational anthropology, medical anthropology, and community anthropology. While rooted in Long Beach's local languages and cultures, the program maintains a worldwide perspective. Our department is affiliated with COPAA (Consortium of Practicing and Applied Anthropology Programs).
