The Great Plains Institute for Food Safety provides various undergraduate and graduate programs focused on food safety. This field has become a major priority for countless Americans, attracting significant global attention, investment, and resources, while also facing a noticeable shortage of skilled professionals. The College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources offers a four-year food science curriculum through the Department of Plant Sciences. This program leverages the knowledge of NDSU faculty across multiple departments, who bring both academic and research expertise, along with industry experience and strong food sector connections. Key facilities like the Quentin Burdick Building (QBB) and Harris Hall at NDSU contain specialized labs and classrooms for food science instruction. Students benefit from advanced teaching spaces and food processing research equipment. The curriculum covers food chemistry, analysis, microbiology, processing, engineering, meat science, nutrition, and cereal technology, alongside foundational courses in math, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Advanced food science courses typically follow these core subjects, allowing students to build a strong knowledge base. The program offers adaptable elective options to align with individual career aspirations, with focus areas such as food safety, microbiology, sciences, business, engineering, nutrition, and processing.
