The Department of Modern Languages emphasizes the crucial importance of effective communication skills for college graduates. Increasingly, employers prioritize and reward strong language capabilities in their recruitment and career advancement decisions. These organizations understand how foreign language education enhances such skills. Additionally, bilingual proficiency often serves as a career accelerator or becomes an essential requirement for specialized roles. In our globally connected era, understanding foreign languages and cultures unlocks career paths that were scarcely available decades prior, including positions like international trade specialist, global advisor, diplomat, and cross-border agricultural expert. The demand for multilingual abilities will only intensify in coming years. Students can pursue French and Spanish majors through the department, while German is available up to intermediate levels. Through Tri-College University partnerships, NDSU also provides Japanese and Chinese courses. Our teaching focuses on mastering listening, speaking, reading, and writing competencies. Advanced courses feature small class sizes to enable personalized language learning approaches.
Our globalized society creates an imperative for multilingual communication skills. As international collaborations and exchanges expand, especially in government and corporate sectors, individuals with language expertise gain significant professional advantages. Research also demonstrates that acquiring a second language enhances general communication abilities in one's native tongue.
