The Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages provides instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Classical Languages (including Ancient Greek, Latin, and Biblical Hebrew), as well as certain less commonly taught languages. Undergraduate programs are available in Chinese Studies, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Judaic Studies, and Spanish Studies, with the option to pursue dual majors. The curriculum equips students with literary understanding, cultural awareness, and practical language proficiency essential for careers in education, business, government service, or advanced academic research in related fields.
Participation in study abroad programs is mandatory (or highly recommended, depending on the program) for modern language majors, typically for one semester or through approved alternatives. The department directly oversees University of Connecticut programs in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Tianjin, China, while additional opportunities exist across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. While the junior year is often ideal for international study, qualified sophomores and seniors may also participate. Students considering study abroad should seek guidance from their academic advisors.
