Ball State's English Language Arts teaching program equips you for a career in secondary education. Throughout your studies, you'll engage with English and communications coursework alongside specialized classes on instructional techniques, all led by our committed faculty with extensive public school experience and academic expertise. Graduates who finish the program, including a student teaching semester, earn certification to teach English/Language Arts and Communications in Indiana secondary schools. This major specifically prepares educators for middle and high school environments through: foundational English and communication courses meeting licensure requirements, a specialized focus area (English or communications) for deeper subject mastery, and teaching methodology classes that develop pedagogical skills while fulfilling professional educator preparation standards. Your academic journey will include regular progress evaluations through the Unit Assessment System (UAS), with specific performance benchmarks required to maintain enrollment in the teacher education sequence.
