The University of Virginia's English Department provides eligible English majors with an accelerated five-year BA/MA degree pathway. Qualified third-year students must apply by May 18 for program consideration. Accepted candidates will enroll in two graduate-level courses (5000 or 8000 level) during their senior undergraduate year, along with the fall semester's ENGL 8800 (Research Methods Introduction). As MA candidates the following year, they'll complete ENGL 8800 plus six more graduate courses while meeting degree distribution criteria. Participants must also finish either a critical thesis, pedagogical thesis, or oral examination, plus satisfy language requirements. To achieve the Graduate School's 30-credit mandate, students register for three ENGL 8999 research credits while developing their thesis or preparing for exams under faculty guidance.
