The department engages in professional work spanning instruction, academic investigation, and community outreach. Its program serves as an educational hub, research facility, and information resource for food science across North Carolina and the United States. The department hosts two specialized research facilities: the Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center and the Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies. Students can pursue coursework and research projects in diverse fields including biochemical chemistry, food engineering, microbial studies, nutritional science, and processing methodologies. Faculty and staff focus their strategic efforts on critical domains: ensuring food safety and preventing foodborne illnesses, supporting food production and business development, enhancing teaching methods and learning outcomes, and promoting nutritious foods for better health.
