The department provides an interdisciplinary Master's program in Russian and Slavic studies, enabling students to enroll in Russia-focused courses across various NYU departments. Beyond the program's core strengths in literature, history, and cinema, students can explore diverse specializations including anthropology, political science, music, linguistics, and performance studies. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and comparative methods, this program effectively prepares students for PhD-level graduate studies while offering comprehensive Russia-focused training for those pursuing terminal MA degrees and careers in this field.
Applicants to the MA program must possess a bachelor's degree and demonstrate advanced proficiency in Russian. While most students hold undergraduate degrees in Russian studies, applicants from other disciplines may be considered if their Russian language skills meet graduate-level requirements.
To earn the MA degree, students must complete eight courses (32 credits) and submit a thesis. Before graduation, candidates must achieve advanced proficiency in all language competencies (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), demonstrated either through examination or by earning an A-equivalent grade in the department's third-year Russian course.
