New York University's Department of East Asian Studies provides both doctoral and master's degree programs focused on East Asian Culture. These graduate programs explore cultural aspects, media, and representational issues concerning the development of modern East Asian societies, including China, Japan, and Korea. Moving beyond conventional area studies approaches, the curriculum critically examines East Asia's modernity within a global context, often through interdisciplinary lenses. While considering how historical traditions influence contemporary societies, the program primarily investigates modernity as both a historical phenomenon and theoretical challenge.
Throughout their studies, students will cultivate critical perspectives on the political, institutional, and methodological implications of both discipline-specific and regional studies approaches. With guidance from advisors and faculty within and beyond the department, students can tailor their academic paths to focus on literature, cinema, various media forms, theoretical discussions, historical research, gender and sexuality studies, sociopolitical movements, or combinations of these areas.
