New York University School of Law (Law) and Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) provide combined dual degree options that award both a Juris Doctor (JD) and either a PhD or MA in three Arts and Science fields: Economics, Philosophy, and Politics.
These integrated programs shorten the timeline for earning both degrees. The Law School accepts 12 credits of GSAS coursework toward the 83 credits needed for the JD, enabling dual degree candidates to finish their JD studies in five terms instead of six. All courses must receive approval from both programs to qualify for the dual degree. Similarly, certain law school classes can fulfill PhD and MA requirements, helping students complete those degrees faster. JD/MA candidates typically earn both degrees in four years (eight semesters) rather than the standard five years if pursued separately. For JD/PhD students, the JD is usually granted after four years, while PhD requirements continue to be fulfilled afterward.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must be at least eighteen years old and hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university or its international equivalent to be eligible to enroll in the Juris Doctor (JD) program. Students matriculate in the fall semester on a full-time basis only.
All applicants for admission to the JD program are required to take either the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) or GRE. Scores for both exams are valid for five years. NYU Law requires applicants to report all valid LSAT and GRE scores that they have received.

All applicants are required to register for the Credential Assembly Service (CAS). After your application is received electronically, a request for your CAS report from the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) is automatically generated. The CAS report summarizes undergraduate academic work and includes copies of your transcripts. If you have taken the LSAT, your LSAT score(s) and your LSAT writing sample(s) will be included in the CAS report. GRE scores must be sent to NYU Law directly from ETS.
