By integrating expertise from the Real Estate and Business Economics & Public Policy departments, Wharton's Applied Economics program utilizes its diverse faculty to equip students for cutting-edge theoretical and empirical research careers. The program offers specialization in multiple research fields, such as Behavioral Economics, Development and International Economics, Energy and Environmental Economics, Health Economics, Industrial Organization and Regulation, Labor Economics, Law and Economics, Market Design, Public Economics, Risk and Insurance, as well as Urban Economics and Real Estate. Additionally, students can pursue interdisciplinary studies by enrolling in courses and collaborating with faculty from other Wharton departments, including Finance, Health Care Management, Management, and Marketing.
Applicant must have an economics undergraduate degree along with the math requirements or a math/statistics degree with several courses in economics (at least up through intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics).
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
