Northwestern's Economics Ph.D. program has earned global recognition through its distinguished faculty, structured curriculum, strong mentorship opportunities, and proven success in attracting and preparing exceptional graduate students. The Economics Department at Northwestern takes a personalized, comprehensive approach when evaluating PhD applications, acknowledging the significant disruptions caused by COVID-19 and other personal challenges. We're aware that numerous schools adopted Pass/Fail grading during the pandemic. Additionally, we recognize that some applicants may face obstacles in submitting all required materials.
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for all applicants applying to the Ph.D. program in economics. Scores must be reported directly by ETS (The Educational Testing Service) to the Graduate School to be considered official.
Students taking the IELTS must have a minimum overall score of 7.0
Students taking the TOEFL must score a minimum of 600 on the paper-based exam, 250 on the computer-based exam, or 100 on the internet-based exam (TOEFL iBT).
