The Master of Arts in English Studies caters to working professionals, particularly high school educators, seeking an advanced MA program to strengthen their qualifications and expand their expertise in their teaching and professional domains. Similar to the MA programs in literature and rhetoric/composition, this degree encourages students to examine diverse literary eras and rhetorical concepts. The program culminates with a flexible examination option.
This 36-credit-hour MA program is structured for completion in approximately two and a half years. To facilitate this timeline, the department schedules evening graduate courses (starting at 5 p.m. or later) each term and rotates seminars across all ten English Studies focus areas annually. Summer sessions feature multiple graduate courses covering different checklist areas. Additionally, the department provides a specialized pedagogy seminar exploring the historical and practical aspects of teaching classic texts.
