The Master of Arts program mandates 30 credit hours, with a maximum of 9 credits allowed at the 400-level. Typically, students beginning after earning their bachelor's degree will need two years of full-time study to finish.
The curriculum offers two paths: a 10-credit Master's Thesis (Plan A) or a coursework-only (Plan B) approach. Every student must enroll in AMST 501 (Methods in American Studies) and AMST 502 (Research and Writing in American Studies). Further courses are chosen collaboratively between the student and their advisory committee. Plan A participants must complete at least 10 credits of AMST 590 and successfully defend their thesis orally. Thesis guidelines are established by The Graduate School.
