The Modern Languages Major has two primary objectives: helping students achieve fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing across two modern languages (Concentration A and Concentration B), while fostering cultural awareness. Students can pair any two of these department-offered languages for their major: Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Concentration A begins at the third-semester level (CHIN 2103, FREN 2103, GRMN 2103, ITAL 2103, SPAN 2103), while Concentration B starts at the introductory level (CHIN 2101, FREN 2101, GRMN 2101, ITAL 2101, SPAN 2101).
With a thoughtfully designed curriculum and strong encouragement to study abroad for a semester or summer, the Modern Languages Major equips students for a globally connected world where cross-cultural competence fosters mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, and equitable societies.
The program actively supports students in pursuing international study, research projects, extracurricular engagements, and community-based learning. These experiences develop their ability to communicate effectively in two foreign languages, analyze linguistic structures, understand key cultural aspects of relevant societies, and demonstrate intercultural sensitivity.
