The Alcohol and Substance Abuse specialization integrates diverse approaches and practice frameworks to equip students for professional roles serving individuals, families, groups, and broader communities. This program trains graduates for employment across multiple environments, including educational institutions, community organizations, mental health facilities, and correctional systems. Program completers will possess the expertise, competencies, and ethical foundation necessary to provide substance abuse counseling while conducting assessments, clinical evaluations, treatment coordination, case supervision, and client/family/community education. They will also gain comprehensive understanding of professional ethics, legal obligations, and proper documentation procedures. Developed in alignment with New York State Education Department standards, this concentration meets requirements for the CASAC credential. MSW graduates can pursue full CASAC certification by completing supplementary clinical hours beyond their degree program.
