The Advanced Standing program offers face-to-face, hybrid, and online enrollment options. The face-to-face AS program is a full-time, one-year commitment (38 semester credit hours), starting in fall and concluding with coursework and fieldwork over two semesters. Hybrid and online AS students follow a part-time, two-year schedule. All advanced standing students must complete two field practicum courses (500 clock hours). Enrollment model tabs provide detailed program plans.
Clinical Practice involves applying theories, techniques, skills, values, and ethical principles to improve cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social functioning across individuals, families, groups, and communities. This practice demands leadership in advancing social, economic, and political equity through culturally responsive, context-aware, and strength-based approaches. It encompasses biopsychosocial knowledge and evidence-informed interventions, including (but not restricted to) assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, advocacy, counseling, psychotherapy, supervision, and consultation.
The Political Social Work specialization draws on the GCSW's pioneering legacy in political social work, featuring distinctive programs like the Austin Legislative Internship Program and our distinction as the sole social work school with a Nobel Peace Laureate faculty member. Specialization students gain from faculty expertise in local, national, and international policy, advocacy, and civic engagement. Graduates develop leadership capabilities for roles as organizers, policy analysts, legislative aides, and advocates, blending political action skills with all practice levels to champion justice for marginalized groups. Alumni work in both clinical and macro practice settings.
