The Master of Arts in Theatre, offered by the Music, Theatre, and Dance graduate program, provides students with comprehensive theatre education while allowing specialization in areas like acting, directing, playwriting, design, management, or technical theatre. This program equips graduates for careers in high school or community college teaching, professional theatre, or further academic pursuits in theatre arts.
The degree requires completion of 30 semester credits, including: three 800-level dramatic literature courses (3 credits each), one advanced course (600-level or above) in acting/directing/playwriting (3 credits), and one advanced course in design/technical theatre/management (3 credits). Students complete their remaining 15 credits through electives, typically focused on their chosen specialization, with at least half at the 800-level.
All candidates must undertake a creative project involving substantial original work accompanied by written analysis. The program culminates with an oral examination evaluating the student's work near degree completion.
