The Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art is an interdisciplinary program that blends a solid foundation in visual arts with focused studio specialization. This advanced degree integrates art history, theory, and critique with hands-on studio work, enabling students to synthesize knowledge at an elevated level while pursuing original research and creative projects. Students benefit from personalized mentorship with our distinguished faculty and receive dedicated private studio spaces available around the clock, along with access to specialized art labs.
Our program features an active visiting artist series, where students engage in one-on-one sessions with renowned national and international artists. With only about 10 students enrolled at a time across the three-year curriculum, we maintain an intimate learning environment.
As an elective option, students can participate in an immersive 10-day residency course during winter or summer sessions in scenic Lake Tahoe. While academic credits are included in tuition, participants cover separate dormitory and meal costs (currently $650).
This 60-credit MFA represents the highest academic achievement in visual arts, holding equal standing with doctoral degrees like the Ph.D. or Ed.D. It serves as the essential qualification for professional artistic practice and university-level teaching positions.
Our Art Department provides comprehensive training across diverse media, including (but not limited to) book arts, ceramics, digital media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. The curriculum balances practical studio work with rigorous engagement in contemporary art discourse and critical theory.
PROGRAM GOALS/LEARNING OBJECTIVES
MFA candidates will: Develop specialized expertise in their chosen medium(s); Contextualize their work within art historical traditions and current practices; Create professional portfolios showcasing their artistic development for careers in studio practice, academia, or arts-related fields.
