The Master of Fine Arts in design/technology is an intensive professional program dedicated to cultivating creative and innovative artists and technicians for careers in theater and entertainment.
Aiming to foster adaptable, resourceful students with diverse portfolios, the program mandates that each participant specialize in one area: scenic design, lighting design, costume design, or technical direction. Electives in fields like entertainment engineering, interior design, architecture, film, 3D imaging, and animation enrich students' perspectives and expertise.
The MFA Performance Program enrolls a cohort of 10 actors every three years. This rigorous, cross-disciplinary training equips actors for diverse performance styles, including contemporary realism, classical works like Shakespeare, and on-camera acting.
First-year students build foundational skills in action analysis, subtext, environment work, emotional preparation, ensemble development, characterization, vocal techniques, and script interpretation.
Each term focuses on a distinct acting style, with training in Shakespeare, comedy of manners, modern drama, American classics, contemporary realism, and audition techniques. Advanced camera acting instruction occurs in years two and three.
Stage managers serve as vital collaborators and facilitators, excelling at fostering creativity, coordinating artistic teams, and maintaining productive environments. Their organizational skills, diplomacy, adaptability, and composure make them indispensable to productions. As versatile professionals, they deeply understand their collaborators' creative processes.
The stage management curriculum emphasizes broad knowledge through required studies in directing, technical production, and design disciplines. Additional coursework covers production management, company operations, and theater administration.
