The Writing Seminars provides a Master of Fine Arts degree specializing in fiction and poetry. This intensive two-year program caters to students dedicated to mastering literary writing at an advanced level. MFA candidates collaborate with distinguished faculty members, participating in rigorous literary seminars, intimate workshops, compiling a first-year portfolio, and completing a second-year thesis. Beyond core faculty, students gain insights from visiting authors through events like The President's Reading Series (Literature of Social Importance), The Turnbull Poetry Lectures, and other engagements featuring luminaries such as Marilynne Robinson, Salman Rushdie, and Tracy K. Smith. All enrolled students benefit from full tuition coverage, health insurance, and a substantial teaching fellowship of $39,000 starting next academic year (2024-25). Opportunities include assistant editor roles at The Hopkins Review. Admission is highly competitive, with selection based on manuscript quality, academic records, a statement of purpose, and recommendation letters demonstrating literary potential. Numerous graduates secure book deals within three years and earn prestigious honors like Stegner Fellowships or NEA grants. Starting with the 2023 cohort, graduating MFAs may apply for one-year junior lectureships, teaching three creative writing courses per term with full benefits.
The Writing Seminars requires transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work (including overseas study and college work which may be shown as transfer credits on another transcript).
