The Master of Arts in Hispanic Literatures and Linguistics at UMass Amherst offers an exceptional chance to enhance your Spanish or Portuguese language proficiency and cultural understanding.
Upon starting the program, you'll be paired with an advisor specializing in your chosen focus area: Iberian studies, Hispanic linguistics, Latin American and Latinx studies, Portuguese and Brazilian studies, or translation in the Hispanic and Lusophone world. Additionally, you can select a dual concentration if desired.
The program concludes with either a comprehensive exam or a thesis project, both designed to equip you for advanced graduate studies or professional opportunities in the discipline.
UMass Amherst Spanish undergraduates can also pursue an accelerated MA option, enabling them to earn their graduate degree with just one additional year of study by fulfilling requirements during their senior year.

Bachelor's degree: Prior to their anticipated start date, applicants must complete a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
