The Departments of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, and Physiology collaborate to offer a PhD program. The Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology (BCMB) program aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and research skills for future independent careers. It emphasizes molecular and cellular techniques to address fundamental questions across the participating departments' research domains. By ensuring all students gain a solid foundation in basic sciences, the program encourages investigating biomedical challenges through mechanistic approaches. Its interdisciplinary structure cultivates a cooperative atmosphere perfect for graduate education, fostering the strong sense of community characteristic of Johns Hopkins' scientific culture.
The training involves a demanding first-year curriculum with broad coverage, research rotations in three labs, a qualifying exam based on written proposals (preceded by a proposal-writing workshop), and dissertation work under one of over 100 faculty mentors. After selecting a lab, students affiliate with a department while maintaining their BCMB connection through various activities. These include the yearly BCMB retreat, helping recruit new candidates, organizing a speaker symposium, and joining monthly student-led research discussions. Although teaching isn't mandatory, BCMB students can pursue numerous teaching opportunities if desired.
The School of Medicine accepts prerequisites completed at the community college level. In order to be competitive in the selection process, we encourage prospective applicants with community college prerequisites to supplement these courses by taking advanced courses in related subjects at their four year institution.
Students must have IELTS Academic Band Score equal to 7, or a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), and 100 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
