San Diego State University's Biology Department provides outstanding degree programs instructed by more than 35 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. The department supports around 1,300 undergraduate Biology and Microbiology majors, 80 minors, 150 graduate students, and numerous students from other disciplines. SDSU delivers a diverse curriculum covering cellular/molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and related areas, with undergraduates typically able to choose from over 50 courses each semester. Most classes maintain fewer than 30 students, with lab sections often limited to under 25 participants. Unlike many institutions, we offer an exceptional number of hands-on laboratory and field courses. Graduate students lead lower-division labs, while professors frequently teach upper-division labs directly.
Our strong focus on practical lab work, experiential learning, and research opportunities equips graduates exceptionally well for biology careers, health professions, or advanced academic pursuits.
