Medical school often feels overwhelming and discouraging, but it doesn't need to be that way. At Saint Louis University, we've implemented several curriculum reforms aligned with the Jesuit philosophy of holistic education - nurturing intellect, physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth. Key changes include:
Transitioning to pass/fail grading during the initial two years instead of tiered evaluations.
Introducing ongoing elective courses throughout the first two years, dedicating approximately one full day every fortnight to these studies.
Establishing specialized learning groups focused on service initiatives, research projects, international health, well-being practices, and medical instruction.
Implementing mandatory resilience training and mindfulness programs for first-year students.
Increasing wellness-focused activities beyond the standard curriculum.
These educational innovations have led to significant improvements in student mental health outcomes.
