Our department's faculty and students explore human movement through physiological, biomechanical, developmental, and psychosocial lenses.
Undergraduate students earn a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with curriculum options in either Exercise Science (ES) or Physical & Health Education Teacher Education (PHETE).
The ES track equips students for professional paths including strength coaching, personal training, workplace wellness, and cardiac rehab. Numerous Exercise Science alumni opt for advanced education to enter healthcare fields like physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant programs, and medical school.
Physical and Health Education candidates complete a five-year combined bachelor's/master's program culminating in a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Students earn their BS in Kinesiology with PHETE specialization after four years, then begin the one-year MAT program in May following graduation. MAT graduates qualify for Virginia's PK-12 teaching certification in Physical and Health Education.
Beyond the MAT, our department provides a graduate program in Exercise Science specializing in exercise physiology. This advanced ES program readies graduates for careers in exercise assessment, athletic training, research, and various health and wellness sectors.
