The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a liberal arts program where around 45% of the coursework focuses on musical studies. This degree offers students the flexibility to pursue their individual passions in music alongside other academic disciplines.
Admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music requires an interview, with Music Industry applicants also submitting a portfolio. The curriculum blends mandatory and elective courses in music and other areas, includes four semesters of ensemble participation, and culminates in a faculty-mentored capstone project. While optional, students may audition for private vocal or instrumental lessons during the application process.
JMU provides conservatory-quality training within the expansive framework of a comprehensive liberal arts university. Music majors can specialize in one of six tracks: performance, composition, music industry, music education, jazz studies, or music theatre. Graduates leave the School of Music fully prepared to apply their expertise through teaching, performing, leadership, research, and creative work - making meaningful contributions to society daily.
