The Technical Communication program (as either a primary, secondary major or minor) equips students for professions centered on information management, especially scientific and technical data. Learners develop skills in crafting and designing professional materials, including adaptable digital content like websites. The curriculum focuses on simplifying complex scientific, business, and technical concepts for diverse audiences. Coursework highlights writing, editing, design (both print and digital), organization, research, analytical reasoning, and teamwork (particularly with domain specialists). Many students pair Technical Communication with a STEM discipline, while others combine it with an English major as a supplementary focus.
Graduates with a Technical Communication degree will gain the ability to:
produce diverse printed and digital materials for corporate, educational, and public settings.
interpret technical and scientific data while developing effective communication strategies.
explain and apply theoretical frameworks for evaluating documents, teamwork processes, organizational systems, and technological tools.
show proficiency in organizational dynamics and visual messaging principles, including cooperative writing and creating precise, adaptive professional materials.
recognize evolving audience requirements across digital and traditional media platforms.
design intuitive interfaces and implement best practices for document accessibility and user experience.
